About

silicon mountain

The first representations of landscape that appeared in East Asia, before scroll paintings, were objects of miniature landscapes. Designed for the artists and the literate, these objects served as support for their contemplation exercises, offering a moment of escapism.

Silicon Mountain adapts this item to our more technological and mercantile Western context. Inspired by the world experts in consumer’s attention, namely social media providers such as Meta, Google, etc. it binds it with the current state of our relationship to nature today. Will our desire to connect with nature in its most scenic expressions ever be fulfilled? Such is the promise of technology.

It invites the audience to look back at the historical construction of our Western gaze on Nature; as well as to reflect on the ongoing digitalising of the human interactions with the world. Silicon Mountain gives a new actuality to Elisée Reclus’s famous quote from 1890:
Man is Nature becoming aware of itself.

Silicon Mountain is a semi-autonomous choreographic performance in the format of an application for smartphone, where space, time and movement can be experienced directly in the palm of the hand.

The choreographic gesture was transposed from the physical space where it normally operates into a virtual space, in order to recreate the perception of a voyage. The viewer’s gaze follows a visual journey inspired by how it would normally proceed in front of an immense mountainous landscape.

You are welcome to install the App beforehand but you won't get access to the Contemplations outside of the scheduled performances.
